Google has announced that Chrome 156 is being promoted to the Stable channel for Windows, Mac and Linux. The Chrome Releases post is dated 20 October 2026, a week after Chrome 155 reached desktop computers.

The Stable channel is the version of Chrome that most people use. Google says the update will roll out gradually, so computers won’t all receive it on the same day.

Who it affects

People using Google Chrome on a Windows, Mac or Linux computer.

What Google’s help page says

Chrome normally updates itself in the background when the browser is closed and reopened. Google’s Update Google Chrome page describes how to check for an update on a computer:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Select More (the three dots, top right), then Help > About Google Chrome.
  3. If an update is waiting, select Relaunch.

Google says relaunching reopens normal tabs and windows, but not Incognito windows. On Linux, Google says to update Chrome through the system’s package manager.
